For the Future – Why a Sámi Dance Center Matters

In November 2024, Jillat – Sámi Dance Center opened its doors in Vuollerim as the world’s first dance center dedicated to Sámi performing arts. More than just a building, Jillat represents a shift: from guest stages to a home stage, from representation to self-determination.

A new report by cultural producer Jimmy Lundegård explores what this actually means – not just for dance, but for the future of Sámi culture. Based on five years of work and field studies, the report shows how a center like Jillat can strengthen cultural identity, enable new forms of expression, and provide a safe space for both tradition and innovation.

“Culture must be allowed to develop in order to stay alive,” says Liv Aira, founder of Jillat.“But you can do so with great respect for your cultural heritage.”

The report outlines how Jillat becomes a platform for exactly that. Through residencies, performances, and festivals like Skájdde and Låvda Sápmi Screendance Festival, Sámi artists are creating work that combines traditional elements – like joik, duodji and mythologies – with dance, video, music and contemporary storytelling.

The results speak for themselves:

– 150 international guests at the opening

– Recognition from global networks like ISPA

– Children’s productions that empower Sámi identity without relying on resistance

– Ongoing collaborations with artists across the circumpolar world

And perhaps most importantly: Jillat offers Sámi youth a space to imagine and create on their own terms. It’s not just about preserving the past – it’s about building the future.
