Residencies, Land and Responsibility
17 June, 11:00–12:00, Ögonblicksteatern, Umeå
Host: SWAN – Swedish Artist Residency Network
Artist residencies are often described as places for time, space and artistic depth. But what does a residency mean when the place is not only a working environment, but also carries history, language, land, relationships and conflict?
In Arctic and Indigenous-related contexts, it is not enough to invite artists to a place. The question is also how they are invited, by whom, with what responsibility and on what terms.
In this panel, SWAN – Swedish Artist Residency Network explores how residency practices can be developed with greater awareness of Indigenous rights, local anchoring, long-term commitment and reciprocity. How can residencies avoid becoming yet another form of cultural extraction? How can hosting, selection, introduction, payment and follow-up be shaped with respect for both the artist and the place?
