Workshop for three days with Marrugeku

Marrugeku is an Indigenous and intercultural dance company based in the remote community of Broome in the north of Western Australia. Combining dance, storytelling, installation art, video, song and spoken word, Marrugeku’s productions are co-created with artists from diverse backgrounds and art forms. The company is led by Co-Artistic Directors, Dalisa Pigram and Rachael Swain. Dalisa is a Broome born movement artist and a Yawuru/Bardi woman who is also proud of her Malay and Filipino heritage and Rachael is a New Zealand born director and dramaturg of Scottish and Irish descent. Together Dalisa and Rachael facilitate collaborative processes with diverse artists and communities to explore the possibilities of intercultural expression, choreographic truth telling about our world and new interdisciplinary languages. The workshop will introduce Marrugeku’s improvisational approaches to embodying social, cultural, personal and interspecies expression to develop new gestural dance and theatre. Working with the participants own movements, stories, cultural backgrounds and experiences we will share approaches to concept development, choreography, dramaturgy and interdisciplinary composition.  The workshop is open to dancers of all styles and backgrounds, as well as actors interested in improvisational movement processes to generate performance. Workshop times will be 10.00am - 5.00pm with a lunch break between 1.00pm - 02.00pm the 25th - 27th of September. We recommend arrival the 24th and that you leave the 28th, and you are free to use our working spaces in Jillat (with fiber internet service) for your own work during the time outside the workshops.

We are inviting four (4) more dancers for this this workshop in this exklusive invitation. The workshop is free for applicants that get selected, but travel, accommodation and food is not included this time. We look forward to offering this type of workshops at no cost for the dancers in the future, when we could include it in our own funding, but until we are granted such funding we believe that there is a value to invite artists from all over the world, starting collaborations and arranging exchange in this form too.

Would you be open to move to the north of Sweden if the conditions were right?

Vuollerim is a small village in the north of Sweden, located in Sápmi, with a strong sense of community and closeness to nature.

Living here means experiencing the Arctic seasons, peaceful surroundings, and a slower rhythm of life – while being part of something culturally vibrant and growing.

We’re asking this question because we sometimes look for artists and their families who may want to relocate long-term to be part of the development of JILLAT – Sámi Dance Center and the local cultural life.
