Why performing arts matter for children
Experiencing performing arts helps children develop imagination, empathy and confidence. Through dance, theatre, music and storytelling, they encounter new perspectives, emotions and ways of understanding the world. Live performance also gives children something increasingly rare: a shared experience that happens in the same room, in real time. It invites curiosity, conversation and creative thinking, while showing children that their own feelings, ideas and ways of expressing themselves have value.
Children are welcome to respond, move, laugh, ask questions or take a break. Different performances have different audience expectations, and we will make these clear before the event.
Children don't need to act like adults
Visiting Jillat as a family
Children experience performances in different ways. Some enjoy sitting close to the action, while others need movement, distance, explanations or breaks.
Our event pages include practical information about age recommendations, duration, language, sound, light and content whenever possible.
Age recommendations are guidance rather than a judgement of an individual child.
Family-friendly events
Some events are created specifically for:
-
young children
-
school-age children
-
teenagers
-
families
-
mixed-age audiences
Other performances are created for general audiences but may still be suitable for children.
Look for the age recommendation and practical information on each event page.
Before you arrive
It can help to tell children:
-
where you are going
-
what type of event they will see
-
approximately how long it lasts
-
whether the room becomes dark
-
whether the sound may be loud
-
whether performers come close to the audience
-
whether children may move or participate
-
whether there is a break
Contact us if your child benefits from photographs, a description of the space or more detailed preparation.
During the event
We understand that children may respond verbally, move, laugh, ask questions or need to leave.
The expected audience behaviour varies between performances. Some works welcome active participation, while others depend on quiet concentration.
We will try to make this clear before the event begins.
No family should feel ashamed if a child needs a pause. Staff can help you leave the room when necessary.
Babies and very young children
Not all events are suitable for babies or very young children, particularly when the performance includes loud sound, darkness or limited space.
Check the event information or contact us before booking.
Strollers and practical needs
Strollers can be left in the cloakroom. Space inside the performance area may be limited. Please contact us if you need to keep a stroller or mobility equipment close to your seat. We do not currently have a changing table. Please contact us if you need practical information before arriving with a baby.
Food and allergies
Some family events include food or refreshments.
Please inform us about allergies or dietary requirements when registering for an activity that includes food. We cannot always guarantee an allergen-free environment, but we will provide clear information about what is served.
