Dancers

We are seeking two dancers for a new performance led by Liv Aira at Jillat – Sámi Dance Center. The production combines contemporary dance, Sámi cultural expressions, newly composed music and yoik, and immersive stage design. Rehearsals and creation will take place in autumn 2025, with wage, travel, accommodation, and food fully covered.

We are looking for two dancers for a new production.

About the Dance Production

This will be a dance performance that brings together contemporary movement, high-quality stage costumes inspired by Lule Sámi design, and newly written music with sound images and recordings from Sápmi. Conversations and voices become part of the artistic soundscape together with newly composed yoik.

The set design is a modern interpretation of traditional Sámi dwellings and tools, created with alternative materials such as transparent fabrics, light, and smoke effects. We will transform gymnasiums and smaller theaters into immersive stage environments, where audiences may not even recognize the space once the performance begins.

We aim to create a magical experience where sound, light, and dance are woven together. The choreography is led by Liv Aira and builds on her master’s research into the meeting between Sámi culture and contemporary dance. The style is score-based, influenced by release techniques, and developed collectively with the dancers through workshops and improvisational structures.

Early in the process, all artists will be involved to create interaction between the art forms. Costumes, music, and scenography will develop dramaturgically alongside the dance, with room for transformation as the performance grows.

Through this performance, Sámi dancers continue to explore the journey of dance in Sápmi—both old and new expressions. We hope to inspire pride in identity and heritage, spark conversations about multicultural belonging, and create a positive and innovative encounter with Sámi performing arts. For many in our audience, this may be their first meeting with both live dance and Sámi culture.
